To Thine Own Self be True
This is my first blog post, so I thought it would be fitting to tell you about myself, KMC Productions and how this company is being reimagined.
Initially I started KMC Productions as a boutique production company that would focus on creating short documentaries and promotional videos for schools and non-profit organizations. The work was meaningful and provided adequate income but these projects didn’t satisfy the deeper need I had as an artist to tell the stories that are important to me. I decided to take a leap of faith. As Shakespeare advised through Polonius in Hamlet “To thine own self be true.” Easier said than done.
I struggled with the questions, “What am I most passionate about? And “What do I really want to do with my life?” I thought back to the goals I had years ago when I went to film school, before life got in the way of youthful idealism. I wanted to tell stories for women and about women from a female perspective. As an African American woman I wanted to see more diverse cinematic and programming options. I wanted to see historical documentaries with subjects to whom I could relate. Then finally, a new mission for KMC Productions was born, to produce honest and compelling documentary films with imaginative storytelling that introduce, diverse audiences to interesting women in history.
Like most people with a family and numerous financial responsibilities,
I am finding it incredibly difficult to fully commit my limited resources, time, physical and creative energy, and passion to a venture that may or may not produce sustainable revenue. I’ve never believed in the romanticized theory of being a “starving artist”, so I am all in. I am committing to make films that I love. With a little luck and a lot of perseverance I will make this company financally successful.
With this post I stand before my family, friends and colleagues committing to put the skills I’ve developed and the faith I have to the test. I hope you will follow me on this journey to build KMC Productions and create films I am passionate about.
